200W HIGHMAXES REPLACE 400W METAL HALIDE AT UA, TUSCALOOSA.

West Caldwell, NJ, 2010 - The University of Alabama Gymnastics Practice Gym, (the Frances Smith Gymnastics Practice Facility) was originally lit by 400 watt metal halide lamps.

Through the services of MaxLite’s Paul Bergkessel along with Northport Electric Supply in Tuscaloosa, the 400 watters were replaced with 200 watt HighMax Compact Fluorescent lamps. The fixtures were also replaced with MaxLite’s acrylic fixtures. This immediately netted the University a savings of half their lighting bill.

But, because this was a gymnastics facility, Head Coach Sarah Patterson was vitally interested in the quality of the new light in the gym.

In this respect the HighMaxes with a CRI of 84 were a great improvement on the old lighting. And the acrylic fixtures added greatly to the cheerful atmosphere in the 12,500 square foot facility.

So while the Tide continues practicing their winning ways, (they placed third in the NCAA National Championships, with 16 of their team earning spots on the league’s Academic Honors Roll), Paul Bergkessel and Northport Electric Supply in Tuscaloosa are continuing to work with other departments in the University.

“NEW LED Products for the marketplace”

The widely read Light Directory is an on-line website featuring the latest advances in lighting products. It has over 50,000 designers, architects, and institutional customers as members, with approximately three times that number in e-mail recipients around the US.

MaxLite’s LED Flat Panels were featured in the New Products section of this month’s directory and showcase.

The LED Flat Panels are designed for installation in drop ceilings and are typically used to replace standard 2×2 and 2×4 fluorescent fixtures. They have a slim 3 inch profile making them ideal for low depth ceiling cavities. The housing the back panel and the trim are all aluminum, providing maximum heat sink and thermal control capabilities. The lens is a translucent white polycarbonate.

The Dot is the thermal dot placed on the outside of the HighMax ballast housing. The Dot is positioned right next to the most heat sensitive elements of the ballast. When the internal temperature of the ballast becomes too high for the ballast to keep operating, the white dot inside the blue square turns black. This is a sure-fire way to tell when an application is not suitable for a HighMax lamp.

The dot turns black when the internal temperature reaches 82C or 180F. This is not the ambient temperature surrounding the fixture, nor the temperature inside the fixture. It is the internal temperature of the ballast itself.

This self-testing device increases customer satisfaction by making it easy to test applications before a retrofit or new construction program begins. The Dot also makes it easy to trouble-shoot applications after installation. If the Dot has blackened then the application is not appropriate. If the Dot has not blackened then some other local condition is causing problems.

“Switching to CFLs is a no-brainer”

Well known construction and repair guru James Dulley is advising his loyal readers to switch to CFL’s and listed MaxLite CFLs as one of his choices.

That’s a strong recommendation from someone who has been advising building and home owners through his weekly column for more than 20 years.

As James Dulley said, even 20 years ago when CFLs cost $20, using them made sense. Now with the cost today of only a couple of dollars or less, switching to CFLs is a “no brainer”.

The most interesting point of Dulley’s advice to readers about MaxLite CFLs was his accurate assessment of the mercury used. He pointed out that although MaxLite CFLs do use mercury, most use less than 4 milligrams and some a lot less. Since the majority of lead released into the air is from burning coal to produce electricity, using a 13 Watt CFL to replace a 60 Watt incandescent saves approximately 78% of those toxins getting into the atmosphere. The result of using a CFL is a negative release of Mercury. And that’s a good thing.

In fact, it makes switching to CFLs a “no-brainer”.
